The workshop

Old beams. New light.

I am the designer and founder of the small workshop DesignBau Schumann in Schmallenberg, Germany. I make lamps you cannot order from a catalogue: each piece starts from a specific beam, a specific joint and a specific room.

Historic oak timber-frame beams meet black steel. The marks of age stay visible. The light makes them the centre of the room.

Material

What is in every lamp.

Historic oak

Solid wood, partly from very old timber-frame beams. Cracks, nail holes and grain stay part of the design.

Black steel

Fittings, brackets and suspensions in matte black. The metal holds the wood and sets the industrial contrast.

Quality bulbs

Warm light, a visible fitting, replaceable bulbs. The lamp should stay. The bulb may change.

Making

From beam to floor lamp.

A real workshop sequence: an old oak beam, a steel plate, a shade. Not a catalogue piece. A one-off.

Where are the lamps made?

Every lamp is made by Pierre Schumann in the workshop in Schmallenberg, Germany, from historic oak and black steel.

Can I order a custom size?

Yes. Pendant, table and floor lamps are one-offs. Send the room size or a photo and the piece is planned around it.

Do you ship outside Germany?

Delivery is arranged for Germany. Shipping elsewhere is possible after a direct enquiry.
